Azure Subscription Transfer
Transferring an Azure subscription to a new tenant can be a complex process. I recently followed the instructions from How can I move a subscription to a new tenant? to move an Azure subscription to a new test tenant. However, the new test tenant was not appearing in the list of tenants I could move the subscription to. I realized that the account I was using needed to be a global admin in both tenants.
I realised that the account I am using needs to be a global admin in both tenants.
Here are the steps I followed to transfer the subscription:
Login to the Destination Tenant:
- Navigate to Azure Portal and log in as a global administrator to the destination tenant.
- Navigate to Microsoft Entra ID.
- Click on Manage > Users > New User > Invite External User.
Accept the Invitation:
- Log in to the email account specified for the external user. The external user will have received an invite to accept. Accept the invite.
Assign Global Administrator Role:
- Assign the global administrator role to the external user in the destination tenant.
Login to the Source Tenant:
- Log in to the Azure Portal in the tenant that has the subscriptions to be moved as a global administrator.
- Click on Change Directory.
It may take a while for the destination tenant to appear after assigning the global administrator role. After about 10 minutes, I checked, and the list of tenants was available to choose from.
Initiate the Transfer:
- Click on Change, and an email will be sent to the original owner of the subscription notifying them that it is being moved to the new tenant.
[!NOTE]
The transfer process may take some time. In my case, the tenant transfer was completed when I checked the status after 5 hours. However wait 24 hours before starting to use the transferred subscription.
